Vain lounge and bar
Manhattan, New York
1996

A very small project for a bar and lounge in the East Village. It consists of a very long and narrow gallery along which a series of very tall chairs (6’-4” back) forms the lounge area. At the end of this gallery, the space widens up to eighteen feet to form the standing area. On one side of this standing area, there is a curved sweeping bar; on the other side, there is a big flat painting dominating the space. It acts like a mural. It is by the artist Antonio Murado. Due to the existing proportions of the space, very long and narrow, the main design challenge was how to neutralize the corridor like feeling proper of a space to go through and make it feel like a place to be in. Appropriately, enough, various fashion designers book the lounge to have their runway shows.
