Church of Shiloh
Harlem, New York
1996
A small church for a Harlem congregation. When the minister first called me up, he invited me to visit their existing church on Sunday during mass. Perhaps he imagined that I would be impressed by their soulful singing, their holding hands together forming a true congregation, their ceremonial clothes and their colorful loud way to express their faith. I was. Specially their joyous singing. It was instantly clear that the soul of this project would be about acoustics. Therefore, the preliminary design geared very quickly towards expressing on the outside shell what the interior acoustic analysis would determine for the interior shell.
When we first presented the model to the minister, he called it an organic basilica. The model was exhibited in public for the congregation to see.
The project was abandoned for lack of funding.
