A holiday house in Montauk
Montauk, New York
2004
|
Three interlocked blocks form this vacation residence. One of them contains the living room and the dining room area in an open loft fashion, a second one defines the terrace and the courtyard, and a third one, in vertical position, includes the service area and the bedrooms on the two upper floors. The kitchen is located at the intersection of all three blocks. It is an open kitchen surrounded by a long counter bar. Its presence is strong; the house is designed for a person that enjoys cooking and entertaining. It seems that kitchens, during informal entertainment, are always a gathering magnet, no matter how remote or hidden they are. Our intention in this case was to make the kitchen also an architectural magnet. The walls, including the patio walls, are conceived in their proportions as display walls where the owner, a photographer, can hang his work on an architectural scale.
