Casa Valencia
Valencia, Spain
1991
Given its location, this is a house without views. In response to this fact, the different spaces in the house open themselves as much as possible to the immediate context of the lot. The lot is in the Mediterranean part of Spain. An area of orchards and groves. An area of intense light and colors. Sorolla. The house occupies the entire lot the perimeter of which is defined by a continuous wall two meters and eighty centimeters high. A series of spaces develop within this perimeter. Some are open and some are closed, but they are all related to each other. Thus, the kitchen opens up to the orange grove room which opens up to the water room which opens up to the pergola room then to the vaulted room across which lies the flower garden room, etc, etc.. These linked spaces are characterized by the juxtaposition of the different atmospheric light conditions permeating from room to room as well as by the juxtaposition of the architectural materials that define them (red terracotta brick, black soil, water, flowers, glass, ivy, stucco, vines, oranges, sky. Using the vernacular elements of the region’s context the project tries to extract and their essence, re-articulate them architecturally for the main purpose of addressing the client’s program and introduce them back into the landscape.
